Canadian newspaper the Winnipeg Free Press has opened a café in the city centre, offering a place to meet, eat and drink, and attend events. The branded News Café hopes to be a social hub, and editors, writers and columnists from the newspaper work there on rotation, giving people the chance to meet them and talk about what’s going on in the community. The menu is designed by local restaurateur Domenic Amatuzio and features locally-sourced, organic dishes. The café will be hosting a variety of events like town meetings, mini-concerts and book readings.

The Winnipeg Free Press claims that it’s social media presence has improved and there have been lots of visitors to the café. Using the location as a workspace for the newspaper’s staff gives them the chance to have a direct dialogue with the public and increase community engagement.
